The Daily Iowegian
---- — Howdy folks. Well I guess ready or not, winter is coming! I can honestly say that the only good part of winter is the beauty and of course a slow down for a lot of hard working farmers. It always amazes me the time and dedication that they give to a life they love.
This weeks recipe is an odd one. I ran across some cooking site that had “fake-out” recipes and thought it would be a fun challenge to make one and see if it really tasted like the real one. Much to my surprise there was no difference! I made Grape-Nuts! The store cost on name brand was high and the generic still pretty high so my goal was to make it cheaper and no weird ingredients to preserve it so here you go.
3 ½ c. of graham flour
1 c. brown sugar
2 c. buttermilk or sour milk
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
Directions: Sift flour, add soda and salt, sift again. Add sugar and mix thoroughly. Then add milk and stir until smooth. Grease a jelly roll pan and spread dough out. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden and crisp. Let it cool and grind in food processor. Store in airtight container and enjoy.
A few quick notes. The memorial dedication will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 at the cemetery and Enfys McMurry will be speaking. Then the group will head over to the community center for coffee and goodies.
