---- — August is upon us already. What happened to the summer? We will have lots of fun things to do before summer is over.
The “Older Iowan’s Day” at the Iowa State Fair is Wednesday, Aug. 14. If you would like to go on the 10-15 Transit we will offer the transportation only for $15/person. Once at the gate the senior rate for the day will be $8/person. You will be responsible for the admission ticket and we will arrange only the transportation. If you are interested in this option you must stop by and sign-up and pay by Aug. 7. We will depart the club at 7 a.m., and return home by 5 p.m. This will allow the cooler part of the day to enjoy the sites.
Friday, Aug. 2 is the first day to sign-up for the four-day Quad City trip. This trip will be Sept. 23-26 which will include; one full day ride on the Celebration Belle from south of LeClaire to Dubuque which will include the breakfast, lunch and dinner with music and tour of two lock and dams. One day guided tour of Arsenal Island and John Deere Pavilion. Lodging will be at the Isles Casino in Bettendorf with gaming money and meals. We will also visit her sister casino Rhythm & Blues Casino in Davenport for a four hour stay that includes a lunch buffet and $5 gaming. We will offer two options on this trip. You may go only for the casino package for $200/person (based on double occupancy) or take the complete touring package for $335/ person (based on double occupancy). We must have 40 to take this trip and sign-up must be by Aug. 28. Please make sure to comply with these deadlines because we will be in Alaska for 11 days the first of September. Monday, Aug. 5 the group is off to our three-day trip to Ames/West Bend/ Estherville. This trip will depart at 8 a.m. and head for Ames were we will tour the Reiman Gardens. We will also have lunch at the Hickory Park Restaurant. We will depart for the Wild Rose Casino where we will stay for two nights. The casino property will provide two free lunch buffets, two continental breakfasts, $25 in Wild Rose bucks and one $5 food voucher for the evening meal Monday or Tuesday. Tuesday we will depart the casino and head to West Bend to tour the Grotto of Redemption in the morning, and in the afternoon head to Estherville to the Iowa Lakes Community College to tour their wind turbine program. After leaving the college we will go the Little Swan Lake Winery, where we will tour their building and enjoy some wine tasting. The cost for this trip is $140/person (based on double occupancy). We do have a few seats left, however if you are interested you must sign-up today.
Thursday, Aug. 8 we will have an Alaska trip meeting at 3 p.m. Following the meeting we will have our August birthday party w/ co-op at 5 p.m. If you are planning to come to the meeting and stay for the co-op please feel free to bring your covered dish and place it in the oven or refrigerator. Bingo will start immediately following the meal.
Friday, Aug. 9 we will have a corn and bologna feed at noon. Please call and let us know by Wednesday, Aug. 7 if you are coming. This will be a larger number and we need to be prepared for the increase in numbers.
Monday, Aug. 12 is our liver and onion day. Again this is a menu that is enjoyed by many extra and we would need the reservation to be made by Friday if possible.
Tuesday, Aug. 13 will be the only Wii Bowling tournament for the month. Please sign up for the ½ hr. slots as soon as possible. Several seniors enjoy this tournament and limited space is available. Lunch menu for the day will be; pork loin w/ dressing, potatoes, cheesy broccoli, mixed green salad, fruit salad.
Wednesday, Aug. 14 the Appanoose County Public Health nurses will be in taking blood pressures from 10:45-11:15 a.m.
Thursday, Aug. 15 the Indian Hills Nursing Program from the Centerville campus will have their program at 11 a.m. They will have several gifts and prizes for the seniors. The menu for the day will be; Salisbury steak w/ gravy, sweet potatoes, spinach, fresh fruit and hot rolls.
Friday, Aug. 16 we will enjoy some fun “State Fair Games” prior to the meal. Those choosing to attend will have the ability to win items located at each game. The day will start at 11 a.m. and end by 11:30 a.m. for lunch.
Tuesday, Aug. 20 will be the start of a six session program offered by the Area Agency on Aging titled “Better Health / Better Choices.” This class will be held at the club on Tuesday and Thursday of each week for three consecutive weeks. It will be held from 9-11 a.m. each day. Please stop by or call and get signed up for these classes as soon as possible.
Wednesday, Aug. 21 we will have our Chef Charles Program. It will start at 11 a.m. with lunch following at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, Aug. 24 the local Fareway grocery store has graciously offered to have a grilled pork-loin sandwich with chips and drink for only $4. This will be available from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and will a fund raiser for the local Area Agency on Aging. Our local board will use the funds to assure good working stoves, refrigerators and all kitchen needs at the Congregate Meal-Site which is located at the 18-80 Club. Thanks for all your support. Wednesday, Aug. 28 we will have the Caregiver Program from 11:15 a.m. till time of noon chicken dinner.
Looking into September you might want to keep Saturday, Sept. 7 open for a fun-filled evening of good food and bingo. This event will be held at the Centerville Eagles Club with food starting at 4:30 p.m. and bingo to follow. Additional information will be in the Sept. 5 18-80 club article.
