Pre-register by Sept. 16 for Mercy’s ‘Walk - Run - Pancakes’

CENTERVILLE — The 38th Mercy Pancake Day Fun Run with this year’s theme, “Walk - Run - Pancakes” will kick off Pancake Day events on Saturday, Sept. 24. The event, a 5K, 10K run and one mile run/walk will start at 8 a.m. at the YMCA located at 708 S. Main St.  Each course consists of various terrains moving through the streets, paths and hills of Centerville and will end on the historic square on North Main Street.

The race will again be enhanced this year by an automated timing system that will provide the most accurate finishing times with almost immediate results.  Men’s and women’s awards in the overall and following divisions,14 & under, 15–19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+ will be presented.  

The pre-registration fee is $20 and pre-registration closes Saturday, Sept. 18. Late or race day registration fee is $25. Pre-registration will be taken at or can be mailed to: Mercy Medical Center, One St. Joseph’s Drive, Centerville, IA, 52544. Day of race registration will be held on Saturday between 7-7:45 a.m. at the YMCA.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
