Dear Editor,

Did you know that the last American soldier to die in World War I in France in November 1918 enlisted the year before from Centerville, Appanoose County ... and he was African-American?

Wayman "Wayne" Minor married Belle Carter; they moved shortly after his enlistment to Kansas City, Mo. Minor's parents and siblings continued to live there in Johns Township. We've tracked the Appanoose County Minor family through 1920. His brothers and sisters were: Minne; Lizzie; Allena; Curtis; Clarence; Arthur; Joseph; Finas; Virginia "Regina"; and Tobias.

The Jackson County (Missouri) Historical Society desires to connect with descendants of Ned and Emily Minor (Wayne's parents) on a project to recognize Wayne Minor posthumously.

Readers with any information or leads are encouraged to contact archivist David W. Jackson, djackson@jchs.org; or (816) 252-7454.

Cordially,

David W. Jackson
