---- — William “Bill” Owens, 78, of Centerville, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at his home.
Bill was born June 24, 1935 in Des Moines, the son of Fred and Margaret (Burgess) Owens. After graduating from high school, Bill continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa. He graduated from UNI with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Bill would later earn his master’s degree in chemistry from Colorado College.
He married Marlene Swanson on Sept. 2, 1956 in Des Moines.
Bill spent several years teaching and coaching in high schools throughout the state early in his career. Bill was very active in the community during the 1970s and worked for Union Carbide as a manager. He was involved in the Centerville School Board and was its president during the Lakeview School complex financing and construction. He was also active with the Appanoose County Little League. He enjoyed sportscasting part-time with KCOG for a time. Golf was his pastime and passion and provided a connection with family and friends throughout his lifetime. After 1980, Bill lived and worked in Oak Ridge, Tenn. with Union Carbide and the Department of Energy. The last several years were spent in northern Iowa in the Waterloo area.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marlene Owens, of Centerville; two children, John (Melissa) Owens of Waterloo and Doug (Denise) Owens of Centerville; four grandchildren, Jonathon (Heather) Owens of Centerville, Holly Owens of Centerville, Garett Owens of Centerville and William Owens of Waterloo; one great-grandchild, Faith Owens; a brother, Joseph (Caroline) Owens of Ely, Minn.; and a sister, Mary (David) Sewell of Tigard, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A visitation will be held in Bill’s honor today at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville from 7-8 p.m.
