Richard Drake, 90, of Winfield, died Thursday Sept. 5, 2013 at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
The son of Charles and Marie (Baumann) Drake, he was born Feb. 19, 1923 in Centerville. On Sept. 19, 1943 he married Dorothy May at Unionville, Mo. He was a graduate of Exline High School. He attended Centerville Community College and received his BA and Masters degrees from the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the US Army during W.W. II. He was high school superintendent at Twin Cedars High School in Bussey and retired from Winfield-Mt. Union High School as superintendent. He was a member of the Lions Club, the American Legion and V.F.W. He was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Winfield; two daughters, Sherry Drake and Ted Moon of Creston and Nancy Drake and John Thoe of Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Dorothy Haines; and one brother, Larry Drake, both of Centerville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister.
The funeral service will be Monday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, with the Rev. Randy Moser officiating. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Friends may call on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield. There will be no family visitation.
Memorials have been established for the Winfield-Mt. Union School and the Winfield United Methodist Church.
