---- — Andrew J. Ragona, 85, of Centerville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Centerville Nursing and Rehab in Centerville.

Andrew Ragona was born Feb. 8, 1928 in Centerville, the son of Joseph “Joe” and Diana (Kennis) Ragona. He married Winnie Howe at the St. Francis Rectory in Mystic in 1948. At an early age he started working in the coal mines. His father owned the Iowa Coal Company and Andy bought a coal truck after serving his country during WWII. He started Double R Dairy Bar in 1964 and operated the family business for the rest of his life. He was the Grand Knight in the Centerville Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville. Andy was an avid Hawkeye and Big Red fan.

Andy is survived by his wife, Winnie, of Centerville; two children, Nancy (Wayne) Hoffman of Centerville and Andrew (Sandy) Ragona of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Bob Hoffman of Centerville, Mike (Vicki) Hoffman of Centerville, Michelle (Robbie) Sands of Centerville, Wendy (Jason) McElvain of Centerville and Drew (Shalee) Hoffman of Centerville; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe (Peggy) Ragona of Donahue; and a sister, Jeanie (the late Terry) Farley of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Diana Kennis Ragona; three brothers, Paul, John and Charlie; and a sister, Joann Kauzlarich.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Mike Volkmer officiating. A visitation was held on Monday, Aug. 19 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville from 12-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Following the mass today, Andy will be cremated and no inurnment will be held at this time.

Memorials have been established to the Appanoose County Historical and Coal Mining Museum and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, IA, 52544.
