Pauline C. Wright

CENTERVILLE — Pauline C. Wright, 99, longtime resident of Cincinnati, Iowa, passed away Oct. 25, 2012.

Pauline was born near Mystic on June 29, 1913 to B.F. “Frank” and Emma Baldwin Haines. She graduated from Cincinnati Iowa High School in 1933 and then taught nine years in the rural schools of Appanoose County. Pauline taught three years at Carr; five years at Cornfield College and one year at Star School. Pauline was a member of the Cincinnati United Methodist Church and prior to her death was the oldest living member of the Livingston Church in Franklin Township where she attended as a child. Up until her later years, Pauline was very active in the church and will be remembered as a great organizer for church bazaars, soup suppers, bible schools, PEO dinners and Alumni Banquets. She will be remembered as a great cook with her big Sunday dinners after church, her awesome pancakes for breakfast and buckeyes at Christmas. She could put on a great evening meal even after a long day of driving the tractor in the hay field and working in her big garden that she always had when her children were all at home. Pauline had a love of reading and studying cookbooks. In 2005 she had a cookbook published with recipes from her life called, “Pauline’s Favorite Recipes.” Pauline enjoyed being a farmwife, mother and grandma, mowing with her rider mower, wallpapering, sewing, planting her garden and flowers and a great love of reading that she passed down to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She liked butterflies and made each of her children a butterfly quilt. When asked what she liked to do, her answer was work. She did like to play games, enjoyed winning and was a good jokester.

Pauline was united in marriage to David A. Wright May 10, 1942. They were blessed with a family of five children. Patricia (Darrell) Else of Norwalk; Wayne Allen (Mary Ellen) Wright, Cincinnati; Sherry (Ray) Brown, Wellman; John Alden (Bernie Hughes) Wright, Beaumont, Texas; Kristin (Randy) Keller, Polk City.

Her husband David passed away March 14, 1976. Pauline then married his brother, Boyd Wright, June 10, 1989. He passed away March 14, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, David and Boyd, a sister, Evelyn Brock, three brothers Claude, Olaf and Orris Haines, a stepdaughter, Alice Stepnowski, grandson Craig Else and step-granddaughter Susan Flowers.

Surviving are her five children, her grandchildren, Lynn (Larry) Burt, Waukesha, Wis.; Jason Else, Kingsland, Ga.; Melinda Gottman and Rachel (Steve) Clark, both from Centerville; John Allen Wright, Cincinnati; Matthew (Anne) Keller and Sarah (Jason) Allen, both from Ankeny; step grandchildren, Ken Brown, Georgetown, Ken.; Donja (Tom) Esk, Ames; Michael Stepnowski, Centerville and Kathy Howard, Des Moines. Eleven great-grandchildren, Austin Osborne and Breanna Else; Heidi, Haley and Hunter Gottman; Meghan and Emily Clark; Casey and Melanie Keller and Lauren and Jenna Allen; several nieces and nephews.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"

A. I support the ordinance
B. I do not support the ordinance
C. Not sure
