Coy Evelyn Rhodes Sorak

Coy Evelyn Rhodes Sorak, 95, passed away on Dec. 9, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa. Born in Wayne County, on Nov. 25, 1918, she was the daughter of Charles and Ella Blanche Swan Rhodes.

Coy graduated from high school in Exline and attended Simpson College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Wayne County. On June 11, 1944, Coy married Tom Sorak. They lived in Centerville for many years before moving to Ottumwa. Tom preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 2013.

Coy’s greatest joy was her family and they feel deeply grateful to have been given the gift of her great love.

She is survived by her children, Judy Jones of Longmont, Colo., Tom Sorak, Kurt Sorak and Jon Sorak all of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren, including Scott (Carol) Jones, Meghan Jones, Mika Sorak, Nik (Sylvia) Sorak, Deanna Sorak, Heather (Cory) Meyer, Rachel Sorak, Kate Sorak and Anne Sorak; nine great-grandchildren, Dylan and Molly Jones, Nevan Sorak, Scarlet, Blaine and Grayson Meyer, Tahviana Sorak, Bella Sorak and Phoebe Sorak; daughter-in-law, Kathy (Tim) Sorak; numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Tim Sorak in 2004; a brother, Charles Rhodes; and sisters, Ilene Strunk, Bernice Massa, Margaret Rowan, Ruth Humphrey and June Leach.

Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa with Father Bernie Weir presiding. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Visitation is open after 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Visitation or Ottumwa Public Library.

The Iowegian wants readers to think about the solicitation ordinance that will prevent groups or individuals from entering a roadway to solicit money. The Centerville City Council in June by a 5-0 vote passed the first reading of just such an ordinance. Public pressure and during a subsequent special meeting, the council voted 3-2 to table the ordinance. A second special meeting to discuss the solicitation ordinance is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 at City Hall. So, the question of the week is, "Do you or do you not support the ordinance to prevent solicitation of funds in city streets?"
