Roma Kathleen (Halden) Hankins

The Daily Iowegian

---- — Roma Kathleen was born on Sept. 17, 1935 in the small Midwestern town of Moravia. Parents Lorene (Bradley) and Emil Halden raised Roma Kathleen and sister Patricia on their farm’s lush green pastures where they enjoyed horseback riding, tending to kittens, harvesting vegetables and picking fresh garden bouquets for the kitchen table. Roma received a great education while making time for basketball, music, church and academic clubs. She always treasured memories made with family and friends.

When she became a legal secretary, her path turned toward Mt. Pleasant where she met the love of her life, Bob L. Hankins. They married on a snowy evening, Dec. 27, 1958 at the United Brethren Church in Moravia. After spending time in Kirksville, Mo. for Bob to finish his business education degree, they moved to Sterling, Ill., where they made their home and took joy in raising four children: Lana (Fred) Tannenbaum, Steve (Susan) Hankins, Kevin (Sonia) Hankins and Phil (Melissa) Hankins. They truly loved the time they spent with their friends and colleagues in the Sauk Valley area.

Over time, Bob and Kathy were delighted with grandchildren, Luke, Reese, Caleigh, Brynn and Ada. They eventually moved to Charlotte, N.C. to be near family as Bob’s siblings and families all relocated to the area as well. They were thankful to be blessed with so many caring people in their lives. On Aug. 27, 2013 Roma joined Bob in heaven after exceptional care in the Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster of Charlotte, N.C.

Roma was predeceased by her devoted and loving husband Bob; her parents Lorene and Emil; her sister, Patricia; and her brother, George, who died in infancy.

Her family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, N.C. with her funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. John Gerstenmier will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethany Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204, www.donatehospice.org.
