---- — Thomas “Tom” Allen, 68, of Centerville, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He was born the son of Elva and Virgie (Freeborn) Allen on Dec. 28, 1944 in Centerville. He attended Putnam County High School in Unionville, Mo.
On Dec. 20, 1981, Tom was united in marriage to Loretta Cornett in Seymour. He was a mechanic and worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for more than 16 years. He loved his Ford Thunderbirds and restored many of them himself. For the last 13 years, he and Loretta would spend their winters in Texas with many friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Charles Allen and a brother in infancy; and sisters, Beulah Boland and Barbara Peckham.
Tom is survived by: his wife, Loretta Allen of Centerville; sons, Chad Allen and his wife, Brandy of Lancaster, Mo. and Chuck Allen and his wife, Michelle of Sturgeon, Mo.; a daughter, Christie Cullum and her husband, Dean of Fort Stewart at Hinesville, Ga.; step-son, Mike Houser of Centerville; step-daughter, Rachelle Sporleder and her husband, Michael of Red Oak; sisters, Bonnie Morrow of Martinsdale and Betty Tompkins of Houston, Texas and Mary Oden of Chariton, Mo.; sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Joan Ervin and Dick Allen officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 4 from 1-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and left at or mailed to the funeral home.
