---- — Dorothy Smith, 90, died peacefully at her home in Centerville on Thursday, June 5, 2014.
Dorothy was born to Andy and Josephine (Long) Claire on December 15, 1923 in Lovilia. She received her education from Lovilia Schools. Dorothy was united in marriage to Dr. Robert Smith. She furthered her education to become a Lab Assistant and worked with her husband in Albia at Smith Hospital.
Dorothy was very outgoing and led an active life while she enjoyed living on her houseboat, The Leprechaun, at Rathbun Lake with her Dachsunds. Over the years Dorothy worked tirelessly to promote Rathbun Lake by initiating events such as Crappiethon and Pirate Days. Dorothy was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville, Past President of the Rathbun Lake Association and Regional Director of Crappiethon. She received many awards throughout her life for her dedicated service to Rathbun Lake. A few are, Commanders Award for Public Service from the Dept. of the Army, Crappie USA Presidents Award, Volunteer of the Year Award – Rathbun Lake, a handwritten thank you from Governor Brandstad and numerous other awards.
Survivors include a large “family” of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Robert Smith, son, Jeffrey Linn Maddy and her parents.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m., Monday, June 9, 2014 at Oakview Cemetery in Albia. Visitation was from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials may be given to First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville. Condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.
