---- — Paul D. Burns, 73, of Urbandale, formerly of Seymour, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, surrounded by his family.
He was the son of Leon and Opal (Boyer) Burns and born on Sept. 13, 1939, near Moravia. He graduated from Seymour Community High School in Seymour.
After graduation, Paul enlisted in the US Navy and served four years. On Nov. 1, 1964 he was united in marriage to Betty Fenton. He was employed by Caterpillar Tractor in Mt. Joy, as a heat treat operator and retired in 1988. Paul then moved his family to Moberly, Mo., where he began working for Dura Automotive as a heat treat supervisor until retiring from there in 2002. He and his wife later moved to Urbandale, to be closer to his family. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Jeffrey Burns; and uncle, Paul E. Burns.
Paul is survived by his wife, Betty Burns of Urbandale; son, Dan Burns of Coralville; daughter, Shelley (Rob) Wells of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jeff (Jessica) Wells of Grimes, and Shawn Wells of Ankeny; great-grandson, Jensen Wells of Grimes; sisters, Karen Mattly of Corydon, and Linda (Bob) Espenson of Duluth, Minn.
The memorial service will be Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, with Pastor Dave Abram officiating. Visitation will be held the same day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the family present.
Memorials can be made to either the Faith Lutheran Church of Clive or to Mercy Hospice and can be left or mailed to the funeral home.
