---- — WILTON — Leslie Hugh Garriott, 85, of Wilton, and a former Cincinnati resident, died on Monday, April 22, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born the son of Hugh “Shorty” and Leola Jane (Veach) Garriott on Feb. 10, 1928 in Fayetteville, Ark.

He graduated from the Cincinnati High School in Cincinnati in 1946.

He served his country with the United States Navy and after his service, returned to Iowa and worked with Shorty in the lumber business.

On Aug. 26, 1955 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Liz” Rowan in Des Moines.

They lived in Cincinnati until 1965 when Les moved the family to Davenport.

He worked at John Deere Harvester in East Moline, Ill. and was a supervisor until his retirement in 1985.

He was fond of fishing and looked forward to his Minnesota trips every year. After retirement, Les and Liz moved to Holiday Island, Ark. where they spent 20 years before moving to Wilton.

He loved woodworking and spent many hours on the spinning sailboats.

His most recent projects were decorative birdhouses. Many benefited from his gardening skills.

He was a member of the American Legion in Wilton and was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Pros-perity Lodge in Cinc-innati.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Lonnys Joan Garriott and Aldeen Johnston.

Les is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” of Wilton; daughters, Julie Walker and her husband Bob of Clancy, Mont. and Lisa Chapman and Joe Bromell of Moscow, Iowa; one grandson, Devin Chapman, of Iowa City, as well as many nieces and nephews he loved.

Memorial Masonic services will be held on Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville.

A military burial of his ashes will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Cincinnati.

No visitation is planned and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Iowa City or First Responders of Wilton and may be left or mailed to the funeral home.
