Velta Louisa Martin, 86, of Moravia, passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Velta was born Dec. 26, 1925 to Clyde and Bertha Sedalia (Sheriff) Carter in Haydock, Iowa. She married Tom “Burr” Martin on Aug. 10, 1950 in Chariton. They shared 53 years together before he preceded her in death on Feb. 29, 2004.
Velta attended country school and later worked at a ladies garment factory in Osceola, Snowdon, Inc. She and Tom then moved to the family farm.
Velta was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Albia. She enjoyed baking, working in her garden and helping Tom on the family farm.
Velta is survived by a granddaughter, Elaine (fiancé, Shawn Hollars) McCauley of Spring Valley, Ill.; a son-in-law, Pat McCauley of Princeton, Ill.; a sister, Doris Morgan of Albia; a brother-in-law, Carl (Flora Jo) Martin of Centerville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Velta was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Joyce; three sisters, Hazel, Ire ne, and Ellen Griffin; and five brothers, Carl, Everett, Fred, Floyd and Culver Carter.
Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Able Hagan officiating. Burial will be in Iconium Cemetery, following a luncheon at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Albia.
Visitation will open to the public at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the funeral home, with Velta’s family present.
