Elmer Lee Cox, 95, of Moulton, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at his daughter’s home in Fruitland surrounded by his family.
He was born the son of Dr. Elmer Lee, Sr. and Winifred “Winnie” (Childs) Cox on Aug. 18, 1917 in Glenwood, Mo. He graduated from the Moulton Community High School in 1935.
On Aug. 15, 1939, Elmer Lee was united in marriage to Mary Ellen McConville in Centerville. He farmed for many years near Moulton and owned the Cox grocery store in Moulton. They moved to Moulton after a fire destroyed their home on the farm in 1947.
Elmer Lee was an avid sports fan and was a season ticket holder of the Hawkeye football team. He enjoyed watching all of his children play sports. Elmer Lee also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary Ellen Cox on Aug. 8, 1999.
Elmer Lee is survived by his sons, Dr. John Cox and his wife, Gloria of Tucson, Ariz. and Ronald Cox and friend, Barb Rohlf of Grimes; daughters, Nancy Lynch and her husband, Larry of Bloomfield and Margaret Elaine “Muffi” Harmon and her husband, Dan of Fruitland; a sister, Hortense Hoffman of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Moulton with burial to follow in the Sunset View Cemetery north of Moulton. Visitation will be held today from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and the family will be present from 5-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Moulton Sports Association and left at or mailed to the funeral home.
