Miriam E. Phillips, 89, of Centerville, died Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Centerville Nursing and Rehab Center in Centerville. She was born the daughter of Claude and Emma (Kelce) Breese Feb. 19, 1925 in Centerville. She graduated from the Centerville Community Schools in 1943.
On Nov. 30, 1947, Miriam was united in marriage to Edward R. Phillips at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville. She worked for the Selective Service for more than 3 1/2 years and also worked for her uncle John Dillon’s law office before beginning a long career with Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Harter at Milady’s Dress Shoppe in Centerville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, PEO Chapter D and the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary where she helped in the gift shop.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Edward Phillips on Nov. 6, 2008.
Miriam is survived by her son, Larry Phillips and his wife, Linda of Lamoni; grandchildren, Michael Phillips of Corning and Anne Shaffer and her husband, Jim of York, Pennsylvania; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Aubrey Shaffer of York, Pennsylvania; a brother, Don Breese and his wife, Janice of Centerville; and a sister, Beverly Briggs and her husband, Milton of Florida; as well as several nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18 at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville with the Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 17 from 2-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
