---- — Jennie Josephine (Cortesio) Martin, 83, of Centerville, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Brees Rest Home in Albia.

Jennie was born March 10, 1930, to Charles and Margaret (Mitchell) Cortesio in Rathbun. She married James J. Owens on Feb. 3, 1950, in Mystic. To this union, a daughter, Judith Owens was born. Jennie and James shared 23 years of marriage before James passing on Dec. 23, 1973. Jennie then married Donald S. Martin on Nov. 30, 1974 in Rathbun. They shared 38 years of marriage before Donald’s passing on Dec. 12, 2012.

Jennie graduated from Rathbun High School, class of 1947. She worked at Maytag and Newton Manufacturing as secretary from 1947-1959. Jennie was then a homemaker and raised her daughter.

Jennie was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Newton until 1973 and then of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville until 2012. Jennie enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, gardening, baking and canning. She also loved spending time with family and friends; especially her grandchildren.

Jennie is survived by her daughter, Judith (Rodney) Kaster of Albia; grandchildren, Jared (Julie) Kaster and Travis (Amy) Kaster both of Albia; and great-grandchildren, Paige, Olivia, Avery, Josiah and Kael. Jennie is also survived by a brother, Richard (Kate) Cortesio of Des Moines; a sister, Ann (Robert) McGuire of Centerville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; six brothers, Tony, Louis, Carmen, Charles, Tom and Joseph Cortesio; and three sisters, Rose White and Mary Cortesio and Theresa Cortesio in infancy.

Visitation will be open to the public at 1 p.m. today at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Jennie’s family present from 4-8 p.m. A rosary will be led at 4 p.m. provided by St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society. A private family funeral service and burial will be held the following day.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Brees Rest Home in Albia.
