Ida I. Helmick, 91, of Centerville, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
She was born the daughter of Joseph Roby and Eva (Wieneke) Small on March 30, 1922 near Ottumwa in Wapello County. She attended at Wapello Country School near her home. On Sept. 6, 1938 Ida was united in marriage to Hubert H. Helmick in Unionville, Mo. She first worked at Baxter Box factory, then McGraw Edison and later would work over 20 plus years in the house keeping department at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Centerville. Ida was also involved in helping her husband farm the family farm in Appanoose County. She was a member of the Boots&Saddle Club and the North Bend Ladies Aid. She spend many hour after retiring from the hospital, planting flowers in all the flowers beds at the hospital.
In death, Ida joins her parents; her husband, Hubert Helmick on Jan. 12, 2003; brothers, Donald Small and Ernest Small; and a sister, Inez Brittain.
She is survived by: her daughters, Evelyn Thomas and her husband, Larry of Centerville, Edith McGill and her husband, Mickal of Centerville and Jean Richmond and her husband, Ronald of Exline; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; sisters, Icel Schurtz of Texas, Lucille Leffler of Blakesburg and Ruth Ella Gardner of Albia; also a sister-in-law, Evelyn Small of Blakesburg.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the Rev. Adam Stanley officiating. Burial to follow in the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
