Esther L. McDanel, 93, of Centerville, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
She was born Jan. 24, 1921 in Caldwell Township, near Exline, to Irmel and Maggie (Baughman) Terry. Esther graduated from Exline High School. She was united in marriage to Kenneth McDanel in 1938.
Esther began her career in the medical field in 1966 when she became employed with St. Joseph’s Hospital in Centerville. She worked as a nurse’s aide for the hospital for more than 20 years, retiring in the late 1980s.
In her free time she enjoyed playing cards and crocheting. Esther was a long time member of the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church in Centerville.
Esther is survived by her three children, Larry (Linda) McDanel of Exline, Deanna Sherwood of Centerville and Terry (Dian) McDanel of St. Paul, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, June (Nick) Gallo of Centerville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; a sister, Deloris Foster; brother-in-law, Delbert Foster; and a nephew, Gerald Foster.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 14 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Adam Standley officiating. Burial will follow in the Exline Cemetery in Exline. A visitation will be held on Thursday at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials have been established to the Exline Cemetery, the Exline Community Center or the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
