---- — Michael Joseph Mason, 59, passed away surrounded by his family, friends and co-workers on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Naquin Mason; one daughter, Suzana Kate Mason; two brothers, Kirk Mason and Greg Mason; brother-in-law, Robert Naquin (Valerie); sister-in-law, Susan Garling (Doug); and nieces and a nephew. Mike was a foster parent to many Iowa children, including Sophia Lolita Parker, who remains a close family member.
A 1977 graduate of Virginia Tech in fishery science, Mike started his career in Virginia. In 1981 he was hired by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to manage the Rathbun Fish Hatchery, a facility for channel catfish, walleye and largemouth bass. In 1998, he was promoted to a position at the Wallace State Office Building in Des Moines, as the supervisor of the statewide Fish Culture Section.
Mike was a devoted husband and family man. His commitment and dedication for community and the environment left a substantial and lasting impact. There are entire sport fisheries in Iowa and regionally that would not exist today if it weren’t for Mike’s efforts, especially on the Fish Stocking Programs.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Donations will be given as a memorial to the DNR’s State Fair Aquarium Exhibit. Online condolences may be made at www.overtonfunerals.com.
