Richard Anthony Schmit, 70, of Centerville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 at his home of natural causes.
Richard was born in Mineral Point, Wis. on Jan. 25, 1944 to Mercedes A. (McDonald) and James C. Schmit. After serving in the United States Army he practiced as a licensed master electrician until his retirement from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union in 2005.
Richard spent his retirement much the way he spent his free time; in the great outdoors. Hunting, trapping and fishing were his loves and he took every opportunity to enjoy them. Most recently he enjoyed traveling out west to trap bobcat for extended lengths of time. Richard was a resourceful and independent man; gifts he passed down to his daughters and grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his three daughters, Carrie A. Schmit (granddaughter Jade), Cynthia M. (Wade) Soczka (grandson Daniel) and Colleen L. (Shahed) Ghoghowala (grandsons Gabriel and Zachary Richard); three sisters, Karen Gates, Teresa (Rick) Scullion and Margaret (Jim) Feivor; brother, David Schmit; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward and James; and brother-in-law, Dale Gates.
According to family wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in May in the Madison, Wis. area.
