---- — Teresa Matkovich, 87, of Rathbun, passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
She was born on Oct. 15, 1926 in Rathbun, the daughter of Anton “Tony” and Mary (Yakovich) Chebuhar. Teresa married Mark Matkovich on Aug. 21, 1943 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville. To their union of marriage, four children were born, Linda, Mark, Steve and Susan.
Teresa was an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Rathbun in her early years. She spent several years at St. Anthony’s teaching catechism classes, as well as engaging in the role of cantor with the church. Teresa and Mark passionately ran bingo at St. Anthony’s for many years, as well as playing bingo where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime. There were no strangers in her life. She loved to talk and had a witty sense of humor.
Teresa made the transition to membership with the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville in the latter part of her life. She enjoyed actively participating in the Lord’s Cupboard through the church. Teresa was also a longtime member of the hospital auxiliary, as well as a member of the Walnut City Woman’s Club.
She enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially the time she was able to spend with her husband Mark on the family farm. Teresa also enjoyed fishing, mowing grass and listening on her radio to sports.
She is survived by her three children, Mark Matkovich of Blue Grass, Steve (Des) Matkovich of East Moline, Ill. and Susan Matkovich of Franklin, Mass.; two grandchildren, Amy Matkovich Port Byron, Ill. and Emily Matkovich of Davenport; three great-grandchildren, Katie, Madison and Mathew Matkovich all of Port Byron, Ill.; a brother, Jim (Catherine) Chebuhar of Ottumwa; adopted daughters, Alice Jones, of Albia, and Sherry Kollmann; and nieces and nephews.
Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Mark Matkovich; a daughter, Linda Matkovich; and one sibling, Margaret Koon.
Mass of christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. A visitation will be held all day today at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. A rosary will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
