A new poll suggests that the majority of Iowans don't want to pay higher sales taxes for outdoor recreation and conservation projects.

The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll says 53 percent of those surveyed would oppose an increase to fund the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund. Forty-four percent approved of the idea; 3 percent were undecided.

In November voters approved establishing the fund, but the sales tax increase to provide money for it was left up to the Legislature.

The poll of 800 Iowans ages 18 and older was conducted Feb. 13-16 by Selzer & Co. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
