On Saturday, Feb. 26 Vondale Tonelli-Dodds, RN and Diabetes Education Coordinator for Mercy Medical Center-Centerville, presented a program on diabetes at the Faith United Methodist Church on Highway 5 south in Centerville. The free program focused on helping attendees be able to distinguish what a serving size is, portion size vs. serving size and general diabetes education. A meal was prepared at the presentation to help participants see healthy options to popular foods. Blood glucose and blood pressure checks were done with the assistance of Indian Hills Community College nursing students Randy Carel, Trudie Trent, Stephanie Overton and Mollee Wilson. The students were supervised by Dixie Coy, Indian Hills Community College nursing instructor. Heather McKelvey, RN and Mercy Medical Center-Centerville health promotions nurse and her daughter, Madalyn McKelvey, also helped at the event, which drew between 20 and 30 participants.
