When Family and Consumer Sciences instructor Tess Callen challenged Moravia students to turn the donation of food for a local food bank into an all-out competition, she never dreamed how successful the project would be. On Monday, Pastor Dennis Doud of the Light of Life Church’s area food pantry was overwhelmed to receive more than 2,000 food items which were given by the student body of Moravia Community Schools.

The Moravia chapter of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (formerly known as FHA) was in charge of the collection of food items and encouraged donations by offering a pizza party for the top two classes plus a root beer party for the third place class. It seems a little competition and the joy of giving made the perfect incentive, as Traci Main’s sixth grade class blew the competition away with a total of 881 items donated. Lynn Gheer’s fifth graders took second place while third place went to Melissa Wenger’s sixth graders.

Several high school students and staff members helped to transport the huge stack of boxes to the church’s food pantry. According to Doud, the outreach pantry helps an average of 45 families in need every week and food stores were nearly depleted. The donations will help to restock shelves and provide much-needed nourishment for many area residents who might otherwise go without adequate nourishment.
