This year's Appanoose County Fair will be dedicated to Janiece Self.

Self was surprised by family and others involved with the fair last week at the Appanoose County Extension Office.

Each year, the fair is dedicated to those who have dedicated themselves to volunteering at the fair in various ways.

Self became involved in the Appanoose County 4-H Program and the county fair in the late 1980s, where her first of three daughters became involved. She was a co-leader of a 4-H club then.

Over the years, many jobs have been filled by Self. From announcing on show days, judging the bottle lamb show, helping at sheep weigh-ins, assistant the county fair veterinarian, organizing CloverKids exhibits and filling in at the fair office, there's not much Self hasn't done.

Beyond that, Self has worked part-time time at the Appanoose County Extension Office for nearly 20 years. She handles recruiting donors for trophies and ordering them, as well as overall organization.

Self and her husband Bob have been raising sheep ever since their marriage in 1974. Their sheep herd has provided quality 4-H projects for her daughters as well as eight grandchildren. They also provide affordable lambs to area 4-Hers and help them learn how to care for the sheep.

Both Janiece and Bob were named honorary 4-H members in 2012.

The 2018 Appanoose County Fair begins July 16, 2018.
