Centerville Hy-Vee delivered 176 dozen cookies to Lakeview Elementary Friday, April 12 to unveil their new cookie program.
It started two years ago, when Tony Byington, Hy-Vee assistant vice president of bakery operations and the company’s six bakery supervisors, started the search for a “good-tasting, everyday cookie that customers could find in every corner of Hy-Vee land.”
The idea was to be able to make the best-tasting cookies consistently from any of the 195 Hy-Vee stores with bakeries.
“This is the right thing to do for our customers company-wide,” Byington said, noting delicious tasting cookies were being made but some were better than others. “This new program allows us to definitively say you can find the same, quality cookies in every Hy-Vee, not just some Hy-Vees.”
To get to the point of company-wide cookie consistency, the Hy-Vee search team, after through research, came up with three formulas.
The next step in the cookie program took Hy-Vee to the Nutrition and Wellness Research Center at Iowa State University to conduct consumer testing to evaluate the three recipes.
After testing, Hy-Vee had an ingredient list from the dough that appealed to a majority of the tasters. The next task was to experiment with the ingredients to be able to produce the same taste and quality cookie on a massive scale.
In August of 2012 Hy-Vee returned to ISU with their new cookies and the consumer taste panel loved them.
Hy-Vee’s new line includes 15 varieties of cookies.
