---- — Lakeview Elementary school students are celebrating Red Ribbon Week today through Friday with each day a different theme designed to celebrate being drug free.

Tino Terrones, Lakeview Elementary guidance counselor Friday morning at City Hall, said the school celebrates Red Ribbon Week each year around this time.

Terrones said students today will wear red to show support for Red Ribbon Week. On Tuesday, students will wear sunglasses because they are “Too Cool For Drugs.” On Wednesday, students will wear mis-matched, crazy shoes because they are “Stompin’ Out Drugs.” On Thursday, students will be wearing a hat or a cap because they are “Putting a Cap On Drugs.” And on Friday, students will be wearing jeans because “We Are ‘Jeaniuses’ By Staying Drug Free.”

Centerville Mayor Jan Spurgeon Friday morning at City Hall jump started the week by signing a Red Ribbon Week proclamation.

The Red Ribbon Week proclamation reads, in part: “Whereas, substance abuse is particularly damaging to one of our most valuable resources, our children, and a contributing factor in the three leading causes of death for teenagers — accidents, homicides, and suicides; and Whereas, it is the goal of Red Ribbon Week and Jan Spurgeon to involve families, schools, businesses, churches, law enforcement agencies and service organizations in all aspects of this campaign and establish an atmosphere that supports awareness, education and on-going initiatives to prevent illegal drug use, and Whereas, the Red Ribbon Week campaign theme promotes family and individual responsibilities for living healthy, drug-free lifestyles, without illegal drugs or the illegal use of legal drugs, and ….”

Spurgeon promised to attend at least one day this week and said the city of Centerville offers its full support.

“We as the city of Centerville, we pledge our support in any way that we can to show a strong, unified and positive message and to take a visible stand with you toward creating a drug-free community,” Spurgeon said. “Best wishes with your event-filled week.”
