DES MOINES — Youth cracks judges up

DES MOINES — Ori Trimble, 9, of Seymour earned first place in the Children’s Joke Telling contest judged Friday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Second place went to Paige Hilgerson, 7, of West Des Moines, and Allyson Phillips, 5, of Ames took third. The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.

Albia woman takes fifth in Husband Calling Contest

DES MOINES — Pamela Gladfelder, of Albia took fifth place in the Ladies’ Husband Calling contest judged Friday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.

Cooks nuts at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES — Bakers from across the state squared off in the Trust Your Recipe to Gurley’s competition, judged Thursday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Contestants were asked to feature a Gurley’s seed, nut or fruit in award-winning breads, rolls, cakes and muffins. Entries were judged on originality, taste, presentation and use of Gurley’s products.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas, Centerville, took second in Other Baked Items.
