Members of the fire department and City Council were among those who turned out to help with a city clean up effort Saturday morning in downtown Mystic.
Volunteers met at 9 a.m. to help dig out dirt from the brick street that had been accumulating for the last several years.
The event was the idea of Council member Rick Thomas and came together in just about a week. Thomas said the street is usually cleaned around Memorial Day and since it hadn’t been done yet, he wanted to get it done before the weather got colder.
“We’re just trying to get cleaned up before winter and show people we’re interested,” said Thomas.
Thomas also said the volunteers were hoping to fix the broken flag at the post office and maybe to paint the Coal Miner’s Inn. He said that the town is also looking into getting some Christmas decorations for the city this year and may have a display.
