The Daily Iowegian

---- — AC history

Jan. 30, 1942: For the four years of World War II, letters home from the county’s servicemen were published in the Iowegian. They appeared in a special column “Columns Write” run by Charles DePuy. The Moulton Tribune and the Mystic Sentinel did the same. But at Mystic there was something extra. Mortician Ray Swanson at the funeral parlor attached the letters with cellophane to the inside of the windows — sometimes with a photograph — so people of the town could read them. Every day, Ray changed and updated them. When the G.I.s learned what Ray was doing, they wrote on only one side of a sheet of paper. As the number of letters expanded, Johnny Milburn at Mystic’s Pool Hall followed the same pattern. (431)
