Jan. 28, 1925: By this date, the Ku Klux Klan was making strategic money contributions to Appanoose County churches, ministers and evangelists. This compromised their opposition to the Klan. But the Klan hadn’t reckoned with the church treasurer of the Methodist Church in Plano. He was J.T. Sherrard (Gail Tuttle’s father). The Klan members in full hooded regalia handed him a purse containing 30 silver dollars. J.T. handed the purse back, saying, “Christ was sold for 30 silver coins. I return your money.” ( 281)
