The Daily Iowegian

---- — AC history

Jan. 23, 1925: A new dance: The Charleston arrived in Centerville. The Iowegian described it as a “contortion.” Some dance halls in Iowa banned it. It was first heard in Centerville on this night at the Drake Avenue Theatre with Schaffner’s Syncopating Savages. The company offered prizes for the best local dancers in a Charleston contest. The first prize went to Rollie Jeter, the second to William Penn, the third to William’s sister Irene. All three were African Americans. The company promptly announced in future there would be two competitions: One for white dancers and a separate one for black dancers. (269-270)
