UPDATE, 2:52 p.m.: Wind and snow expected to taper off over evening hours

CENTERVILLE — UPDATE, 2:52 p.m.: The National Weather Service is predicting snow will taper off by 6 p.m. tonight. The NWS predicts a 62 percent chance of snow between now at the 5 p.m. hour.

The wind will begin dipping to below 25 mph round 9 p.m. tonight and will continue to drop over the late night and early morning hours.

The wind chill is expected to drop below zero overnight, hitting -1° around 9 p.m.

The NWS says Friday will be sunny with a high near 26°. However, wind chills will be down to -5° with the 8-14 mph northwest wind and 18 mph wind gusts expected tomorrow.

The next chance of snow forecasted for the area is Christmas day, a 30 percent chance according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE, 12:31 p.m.: Curves will be closed all day.

UPDATE, 10:24 p.m.: All campuses and classes of Indian Hills Community College will close at 12 p.m. (Noon) today. There will be no evening classes.

UPDATE, 10:05 a.m.: The Centerville girls basketball junior varsity and varsity games scheduled to be played against Clarke, Osceola in Centerville tonight have been canceled. Make up date is to be determined.

The Moulton-Udell G/B varsity basketball games at Wayne Community (Corydon) have been canceled. Make up date is to be determined.

The Wayne Community (Corydon) junior high boys basketball games schedule to be played in Corydon against Pleasantville tonight have been canceled. Make up date is to be determined.

Snow, ice and wind have caused school closings and slippery roads Thursday morning in Appanoose County, and throughout the state.

The Iowa Department of Transportation, along with the Iowa State Patrol, are advising motorists against traveling on roadways and all of the K-12 schools in the Daily Iowegian's coverage area have canceled classes today.

Centerville, Moravia, Moulton-Udell, Seymour and Wayne Community will not be going to class today. Indian Hills Community College announced on their Facebook page Thursday morning that they will be having classes today, but are asking students to use their discretion and to travel safely.

Reports have began trickling in regarding drivers sliding off the road, struggling to travel up hills and getting stuck at stops.

The National Weather Service is calling for some additional snow throughout the afternoon. However, the primary concern has become forecasted winds of 28-33 mph with gusts of 55 mph throughout today.

The winds could cause problems with utility services in the area. A telephone line has been reported down in Centerville on North 13th Street.

No power lines have been reported down on the scanner as of yet. Alliant Energy, as of 8:53 a.m., is only reporting three customers without power in Appanoose County and one without power in Wayne County.
