Where to go? When to go? This Independence Day in Appanoose County the communities of Exline, Mystic, Moravia and Unionville, Mo. are planning celebrations in honor of our nation's freedom.
• MYSTIC, SATURDAY, JULY 2
Start off with breakfast at the Mystic Community Center at 7:30 a.m. Then at 10 a.m. watch the cutie contest for children up to 7 years of age. Sign up starts at 9 a.m.
The Queen contestant introductions and Mystic American Legion-sponsored bingo at the Legion start at 11 a.m., as does the Mystic Masonic Lodge hog roast serving pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and scalloped potatoes along with pie, ice cream, hot dogs and drinks.
The parade on Main Street from west to east starts at 1 p.m. followed by the goat races at 2 p.m.
The Queen judging featuring evening wear and fish bowl questions starts at 4 p.m. and the crowning of queen and miss is at 6 p.m.
Theresa Hammett performs at 7:30 p.m.
Fireworks downtown at dusk sponsored by the Mystic Fire Department and food by MBC and the Masons.
• MORAVIA: MONDAY, JULY 4
Attend the Moravia Fourth of July festivities Monday at the Moravia High School football field. An ice cream social with music starts at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks at dark, all sponsored by the Moravia Fire Department and Moravia Ruritans.
• EXLINE, MONDAY, JULY 4
The eighth annual 4th of July celebration activities start at 10 a.m. with the raising of the American flag in front of the school and the car and motorcycle show begins. Visit the flea market from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
At 11:30 a.m. the pie contest sponsored by the Exline Recreational Committee in the Community Building kicks-off. Take your entry to the Exline Community Center before 11 a.m., as the judging will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m. The two categories in the contest are one-crust and two-crust pies. A winner and a runner-up will be chosen from each category. The winner of each category will receive $25 and the runner-up will receive $15. A Grand Champion and Reserve Champion overall will then be chosen. Both of these winners will receive an apron, with the Reserve Champion winning $50 and the Grand Champion receiving $100.
At 1 p.m. participate in the cake walk at the Community Building and the Poker Run starts.
Listen to music at the shelter house at 12 p.m. with open mic, at 4 p.m. with Fineline performing bluegrass and at 6:30 p.m. with the Exline Family.
At dusk watch fireworks west of town.
All day food at the food court, quilt show at Exline Hose Co. No. 1, gas engines on display, Civil War encampment and motorcycle and car show on First Street.
•UNIONVILLE, MO. MONDAY, JULY 4
At 1:30 p.m. all parade entries line up at the City Park. Enter at the east gate and the parade will depart from the south gate. A trailer float will be available at the south gate for all veterans and their dependents. It will be the first parade float.
At 2 p.m., the parade departs from the south gate and travels south on 23rd Street to Highway 136, then east on 136 to the courthouse and around the Square. Exit the Square going north at Subway and return to the City Park via Oak Street, going past the Putnam County Care Center. Young children may join at Peggy’s Barber Shop and march around the Square with us.
From 9:30-10 p.m. enjoy the fireworks celebration courtesy of the Unionville Lions Club and the Unionville Fire Department. The rain date is July 5.
