DES MOINES — Molly Thomas, of Centerville, took second place in Biscuits, first place in Fresh Fruit (apples, oranges, etc.), second place in Pumpkin (with Nuts) and third place in Fruit Muffins (blueberry, date, raisin, etc.). in the Iowa Bed and Breakfast Quick Breads competition judged Thursday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

Centerville baker tasty in victory

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville won First Place Overall in the ever popular Midwest Living Cookies competition held Wednesday and Friday as part of the 2013 Iowa State Fair Foods Department judging. Tarbell-Thomas also won the Sweepstakes award. Entries were judged on taste, texture and general appearance.

In the Bar Cookies category Tarbell-Thomas took first place in Single Layer Pumpkin Bars, second place in Two Layer Bars, first place in Three Layer Bars, first place in Peanut Butter Bars, first place in Apple Bars, third place in Jam Bars, second place in Lemon (Frosting Optional), first place in Rocky Road Squares, third place in Biscotti, third place in Rice Krispies and second place in Bar Cookies Other than Named.

In the Molded or Pressed Cookies category, Tarbell-Thomas took second place in Peanut Butter, first place in Spritz, third place in Peanut Butter Balls, third place in Filled Cookies and third place in Snowballs.

In the Drop Cookies category, Tarbell-Thomas took first place in Fruit Drop (Dried Fruit), third place in White Chocolate, second place in Orange Drop (Frosted), third place in Chocolate Crackles, second place in Ranger, second place in Molasses, first place in Coconut Macaroon, first place in Chocolate Chip Oatmeal and second place in Sour Cream.

In the Health Cookies category, Tarbell-Thomas took second place in High Fiber, second place in Cookies Made with a Sugar Substitute, second place in Low Cholesterol and second place in Cookies Made With Honey.

In the Refrigerated and Rolled Cookies, Tarbell-Thomas took third place in Refrigerator (Sliced), third place in Sugar (Not Rolled), first place in Rolled Sugar (Unfrosted) and second place in Rolled Sugar (Frosted).

In the Cake Mix Fix-Up Cookies category, Tarbell-Thomas took second place in Bar (Frosted or Unfrosted) and second place in Drop or Shaped (Frosted or Unfrosted).

In the Ethnic Cookies category, Tarbell-Thomas took second place in Asian, third place in Scandinavian and second place in Ethnic Cookies Other than Named.

Centerville cook takes one second in Chocolates Contest

DES MOINES,-- Kathy Ann Gocke of Bondurant won First Place Overall and a $100 cash award in the Chocolaterie Stam Chocolates competition judged Saturday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

In Nut Clusters second place went to Robin Tarbell-Thomas, of Centerville.

Entries were judged on appearance, flavor and texture.

Centerville woman earns Honorable in Chocolate Contest

DES MOINES — Chocolate expertise and indulgence were celebrated in the A Chocolate A-Fair contest judged Sunday of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. An Honorable mention was awarded to Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville. Chocolatiers were asked to craft an edible treat with an Iowa State Fair theme out of milk, dark or white chocolate.

Allerton ranch competes in Maine-Anjou Beef Show

DES MOINES — Braun Show Cattle of Northwood won the Grand Champion Bull title in the Maine-Anjou Beef Cattle show judged Saturday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.
