The Centerville School Board met for their August meeting Monday night at the Administration Building. Board member Marty Braster was absent.
The board first heard from Robbie Coe and Mark Lechtenberg about the Centerville Community Schools Foundation’s efforts to raise $30,000 to purchase a new sound system for Simon Estes Auditorium. According to Lechtenberg, the foundation has raised approximately $11,000 so far. Coe said the current system is about 25 years old.
The Foundation has decided to work with West Music to get the new system. The new system will be able to be used by trained individuals, including students and will be locked at other times. The system will also have an automatic shutdown if too many amps are running through the system to prevent speaker blow out.
Lechtenberg asked that the board approve the purchase of the system to be reimbursed by the foundation in order for the system to be in place by Homecoming in October. Later in the meeting Superintendent Tony Ryan said since their was no objection from the board, the district would go ahead with the purchase, and an action item would be added to next month’s meeting to have the board vote to approve the purchase. This was done so the system could be put into place by Homecoming.
The board then approved the previous meeting minutes. They then turned to approving a long list of resignations, transfers and employment contracts. All were approved.
Resignations that were approved include: Brandon Clark – weight room supervisor; Gretchen Willer – preschool aide; Rose Moon – part-time secretary at Lakeview; Julie Ocker – server assistant at Garfield; Robert Sales – food van driver; Ronnie Waggoner – part-time skills lab supervisor at Howar Junior High; and Janee Carson – kindergarten aide at Garfield.
Transfers that were approved include: Kelly Fagen – kindergarten aide at Central to special education aide specific; and Lauren Jones – assistant girls track coach to head girls track coach.
Employment contracts that were approved include: Sharon Brice — secondary math teacher at Centerville High School; Sarah Zintz – sixth grade teacher at Lakeview; Chelsea Daniels – kindergarten aide at Central; Nancy Gee – special education aide specific; Kelsie Johnson – kindergarten aide at Central; Jonathan Kovacevich – study hall supervisor at Centerville High School; Ashton Thomas – kindergarten aide at Garfield; Anthony Jahr – weight room supervisor; Michael Kauzlarich – assistant high school football coach; Greg Lowe – substitute bus driver; Kelly Kauzlarich – substitute bus driver; Tim Kaster – substitute bus driver; Ryan Hodges – substitute bus driver; Jamie Lewellen – regular route bus driver; Heather Benjamin – contract adjustment from 6.75 to 7.75 hrs/day as special education aide specific at Lakeview; Tyler Baze – eighth grade volleyball coach; Lindsey Pettibone – implemented strategist II at Lakeview; Debbie Robinson – first semester only, Howar Junior High family and consumer science teacher; Joni Davis – special education aide specific; Tara Micetich – special education aide specific; and Rossie Wendland – special education aide specific.
Volunteer contracts that were approved include: Lauren Jones – cross country; and Todd Mihalovich – football.
The board then looked at approving a teaching staff realignment within the Title I teachers. According to Superintendent Ryan it would involve moving Diane Ewing to primary elementary and Mary Dudley to upper elementary, basically exchanging the positions. The board approved the realignment.
The board next looked at the contract for the School Resource Officer. They approved the contract, although they were still looking at a possible discrepancy with the city’s numbers of approximately $1,000. The district will pay 75 percent of the cost of the resource officer.
The board then approved the catastrophic insurance plan for Howar Junior HIgh, which is put in place in case of catastrophic sports injuries.
The school district is currently planning to hold an auction of items from the Cincinnati and Mystic Elementary buildings as well as some items from Central. The auction is scheduled with Demry Auction on Aug. 24. Superintendent Ryan said the Mystic Elementary building had been turned over to the city, while the Cincinnati turn over was still being finalized.
Board members Marty Braster and Michelle Moore were appointed to serve on a Policy Committee Review Board for the Good Conduct Policy. The board heard from new activities director Greg Fisher who was attending his first meeting. Fisher said he was interested in making the punishment part of the policy more equitable as well as making the policy more pro-active to help stop students from making violations.
The board once again discussed the purchase of a Suburban. They approved the purchase of a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban for $33,831. The purchase will be made through Pete Harkness in Centerville. They then approved a bill from Evers Construction for $68,400 to pay for the high school paving project. They also okayed donating two presidential busts that had been housed in Mystic Elementary to the city of Mystic. They were originally from Mystic High School.
Changes to the Lakeview Elementary handbook and the Centerville Preschool handbook were approved. The board then began their review of the 700 series of policies. This is part of their annual review of policies. The board approved the first reading of the policies.
On the request of board member Braster at a previous meeting, the board began to review the Athletic Department’s annual goals. Activities Director Fisher said he would like to meet with coaches in the coming days to discuss the current goals the athletic department has and how they mesh with the school district’s overall mission and goals. The discussion will also include performing arts programs and the Iowa Athletic Association goals. The board and Fisher discussed hopefully having some feedback and direction in September or October.
The board then approved sports officials’ contracts. The board then heard from administrators before approving bills and adjourning.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
