---- — Allerton man takes two firsts in Best Beer Brews at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES — Iowa’s amateur beer makers brewed their best for the beer portion of the Amateur Oenology competition judged July 27 prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Adam Hysell, of Allerton, took first place in both Blonde Ale & Wheat and German Wheat categories. Seventy-one exhibitors entered 220 brews in 25 categories.

Centerville cook claims Iowa State Fair Conserves Crown

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville won First Place Overall and the Reserve Sweepstakes award in the C & H Canned Conserves competition judged Tuesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

A conserve is similar to jam, with the same consistency. Conserves generally contain two or more fruits, one of which is usually a citrus fruit. They contain nuts or raisins or coconut. In their most traditional form a conserve contains both nuts and raisins. Conserves are flavored to accompany meat and poultry, but may also be used as spreads on bread.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

Tarbell-Thomas took second in Apple, Apricot, Peach, Pear, Grape, Apricot in Combination, Peach in Combination and Rhubarb in Combination; she took first in Gooseberry and Fruit in Combination Other Than Named

Tarbell-Thomas tops fellow canners in Iowa State Fair Pickle Competition

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville scored a trifecta of awards in the Famous Dave’s Canned Pickles competition judged Tuesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Tarbell-Thomas won First Place Overall, Third Place Overall and the Reserve Sweepstakes prize.

A pickle is a food prepared in a seasoned vinegar mixture or a brine solution to preserve them and or to impart flavors.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

Tarbell-Thomas, of Centerville, in the Cucumber Pickles division took second in Bread & Butter, Sour, sliced horizontally or circular and Sweet, sliced horizontally or circular, Quick Fresh-Pack Dill (not fermented), whole (quart jar) or sliced horizontally or circular (pint jar) and Other than Named, pint or quart jar; first in Sweet, whole and Kosher Dill, whole, pint or quart jar. She received an Honorable Mention in Reduced Sodium Sweet, sliced horizontally or circular.

In the Vegetable Pickles division, she took third in Beets, sliced and Carrots and Dilled Okra; first in Mixed Vegetables, without cucumbers, Dilled Green or Yellow (Wax) Beans, Green Tomatoes, Squash Bread & Butter and Other Than Named, no cucumbers; second in Mild to Medium Peppers and Hot Peppers.

In the Fruit Pickles division, she took second in Spiced Apple Rings, Spiced Peaches, Watermelon Rind and Other than Named, pint or quart jar.

Tarbell-Thomas goes back-to-back

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville earned the Reserve Sweepstakes award for the second year in a row in the Famous Dave’s Canned Relishes competition judged Wednesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. A relish is chopped vegetables or fruit, cooked in vinegar and seasonings. Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

Tarbell-Thomas took third in Chili Sauce; first in Chow-Chow, End-of-the-Garden, Onion, Bell Pepper and Dill; she took second in Pickle (sweet).

Tarbell-Thomas takes second in Iowa State Fair Canned Vegetable Contest

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville took Second Place Overall and the Reserve Sweepstakes title in the Dahl’s Canned Vegetables competition judged Tuesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Entries were judged on appearance, selection of products and food safety.

Tarbell-Thomas took third in Green Beans and Sauerkraut (fermented); first in Yellow (Wax) Beans, Beets, Corn with Red Peppers, Shelled Green Peas and Tomato and Vegetable Juice Blend; second in Whole-Kernel Corn, Okra, Asparagus Spears, Sweet Peppers (in water, pint jar), White Potatoes (cubed or whole), Vegetable Soup (no meat), Tomato Juice, Mixed Vegetables and Mixed Green & Wax Beans.

Tarbell-Thomas wins Savory Canning Titles

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville tied for Sweepstakes honors and she earned Third Place Overall in the Dahl’s Canned Savory Sauces, Meats and Poultry competition judged Tuesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Savory sauces are sauces that are not sweet, but they may include sugar as an ingredient to enhance flavor. Salsa and Tomato Catsup entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety. All other entries were judged on appearance, consistency, selection of ingredients and food safety.

Tarbell-Thomas took third in Spaghetti Sauce without Meat; second in Mincemeat; first in Tomato Sauce (seasoned), Chicken or Turkey and Strips, Cubes or Chunks of Meat (beef, veal, pork or lamb).

Tarbell-Thomas wins first overall in food competition

DES MOINES-- Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville won first place in the Our Front Porch Books Favorite Fair Foods competition judged Tuesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Olive Jean Tarbell of Centerville earned second place. Entrants were challenged to create a dish that reminded them of the Iowa State Fair and include with it a short explanation of why they associated the dish with their time at the Fair. Entries were judged on taste, appearance and meaning behind the dish.

Exline woman takes first in crochet contest

DES MOINES — Susan Cole, of Exline, took first place in Baby Afghan and Afghan (afghan stitch) in the Fabric and Threads Crochet contest judged prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Albia woman earns honorable mention

DES MOINES — Mary Dustin, of Albia, earned honorable mention in Mixed Technique Wall Quilt and Machine Embroidered Item in the Senior Citizens Division of the Fabric and Threads contest judged prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Local women Quilts win in fair contest

DES MOINES — Gail Maddy, of Albia, took fourth place in Pieced, Any Other Pattern (300+); Barbara Zelhart, of Albia, earned honorable mention in Memory; and Mary Dustin, of Albia, took second in Embroidered by Machine in the Fabric and Threads Quilting contest judged prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

DES MOINES — Mary Dustin, of Albia, took second in Holiday Decoration/Christmas Stocking in the Fabric and Threads Sewing for the Home contest judged prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Tarbell-Thomas claims second in Marmalades

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville earned Second Place Overall and claimed the Reserve Sweepstakes award in the C&H Canned Marmalades competition judged Wednesday prior to the start of the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Marmalades are soft fruit jellies containing small pieces of fruit or fruit peel, evenly suspended in translucent jelly. Marmalades often contain citrus fruits. Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety. Robin Tarbell-Thomas, of Centerville, also took third in Grapefruit and Marmalades Other than Named; second in Orange and Peach; and first in Apricot-Citrus.

Centerville woman takes second in bread competition

DES MOINES — Robin Tarbell-Thomas, of Centerville, took second in Sourdough in the King Arthur Flour Bread competition. Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.
