Woman with local ties makes colonel

---- — On Feb. 8, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. LTC (P) Martha K. Brooks was promoted to colonel. Martha is the daughter of the late Willard E. Brooks and daughter of Nellie Brooks and granddaughter to the late Mattie Price of Centerville.

Col. Brooks is the director of public affairs for the U. S. Army Expeditionary Contracting Command, a subordinate command to the U. S. Army Contracting Command, both based at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

Brooks was the first uniformed service member to be assigned to that position she assumed in July 2011.

Brooks has served in a variety of assignments and positions from platoon leader to director of public affairs and has been awarded many military decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, South West Asia Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal-Saudi government and the Army Parachutist Badge.

Brooks is a graduate of Alabama A&M University in Normal, Ala. She entered active duty as a second lieutenant in May of 1990 following commissioning through the Reserve Officer Training Corps and commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery Officer.

In 2001, Brooks was assessed as a 46A Public Affairs Officer.
