---- — DES MOINES — The Iowa Democratic Party today announced the winners for the annual Hall of Fame Award Ceremony. Former Congressman Leonard Boswell will receive the Outstanding Elected Official Award and long-time Polk County activist Ed Skinner will receive the Outstanding Supporter Award in a ceremony to be headlined by Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin. The event will be Saturday, June 8 at the Meadows Conference Center in Altoona.
"The Iowa Democratic Party is proud to honor the achievements of this year's award winners," said IDP Chair Tyler Olson. "These individuals exemplify what it means to be a Democrat, and our party and our state is a better place because of their service."
Congressman Leonard Boswell served in the US Congress from 1997-2013, where he championed veterans issues. Prior to that, Boswell's public service included time in the Iowa Senate, where he served as president of the chamber and in the US Military as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War.
Ed Skinner is a long-time Democratic activist and former state legislator from Altoona. He has been a strong advocate for eastern Polk County and has helped mentor generations of Democratic leaders throughout his life.
Award winners were nominated by Democrats from across the state. They will be honored at the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame Ceremony June 8 at the Meadows Conference Center in Altoona.
The 2012 Hall of Fame award winners are:
Outstanding Elected Official Hall of Fame Award: Congressman Leonard Boswell
Criteria: This award is presented to an elected official whose tremendous support and dedication influenced both the State of Iowa and the Democratic Party. The nominees for this award may be selected from all levels of government including elected officials of the United States or State of Iowa, and county elected officials.
Outstanding Supporter Hall of Fame Award: Ed Skinner
Criteria: This award will honor an individual who has supported the Iowa Democratic Party and all aspects of Democratic politics throughout the years. This individual has selflessly been a resource to Iowa Democrats through means of organizational efforts, monetary support, volunteer work and overall steadfast dedication.
Minnette Doderer Award for Outstanding Leadership: Betty McCarthy of Osage
Criteria: Presented in recognition of outstanding leadership as a Democratic Party activist.
Jim Lodwich Award for Outstanding SCC Member: Norm Sterzenbach of Cedar Rapids
Criteria: Presented in recognition of outstanding leadership as a Democratic State Central Committee member.
Creech Award for Outstanding County Chair: Sue Frembgen of Davenport
Criteria: Presented in recognition of outstanding leadership as a Democratic Party County Chair.
Dixon Terry Award for Outstanding Activist: Kim Boggus of Des Moines and Sue Dvorsky of Coralville
Criteria: Presented in recognition of outstanding service as a Democratic Party activist.
Edward Campbell Rising Star Awards: Tristan Carmen of Council Bluffs
Criteria: Presented to a volunteer or staff member who has recently become involved in Democratic politics in Iowa and shows promise to become an outstanding activist and party supporter.
