---- — Dr. Matt Helmers, Associate Professor and Extension Agricultural Engineer in the Department of Agricultural and Bio-systems Engineering at Iowa State University, will speak to Rathbun Lake Watershed landowners at the Rathbun Land and Water Alliance's 8th Annual Protect Rathbun Lake Meeting Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Allerton Centennial Building in Allerton.
Rathbun Land and Water Alliance President, John Glenn, says landowners in the Rathbun Lake Watershed should have received their invitation my mail.
Glenn says the evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with the recognition of this year's Rathbun Lake Protectors.
"Each year the Rathbun Land and Water Alliance recognizes landowners in each of the Rathbun Lake Watershed counties of Appanoose, Clarke, Decatur, Monroe, Lucas and Wayne," said Glenn. "Selected landowners are presented the Rathbun Lake Protector award for their outstanding stewardship in protecting both the land and Rathbun Lake.”
The evening includes a grilled steak supper provided by the Appanoose County Cattlemen, a brief Protect Rathbun Lake Project overview and Helmers' presentation about best management practices and water quality effects.
Helmers' research and extension focus at Iowa State University is in the areas of water quality and water resources management. He is active in investigating the impacts of cropping practices, fertilization practices, and subsurface drainage management practices on drainage water quality.
Landowners are encouraged to return their RSVP cards to be entered into special door prize drawings. For more information about the annual meeting or if special accommodations are needed, please contact the Wayne County NRCS office at (641) 872-1350.
