CENTERVILLE — A 51-year-old man is running west to east across southern Iowa on Highway 2 to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Rob Gillum, of Des Moines, reached Centerville Thursday morning on his way to Bloomfield. He and his support team started the day in Corydon.

Gillum said he dipped his heal in the Missouri River near Percival, Iowa on Monday, May 7. By Friday, May 11 he will have covered 255 miles and overnighted in Clarinda, Mount Ayr, Corydon, Bloomfield and Fort Madison.

Gillum said the second day of the run was tough, but, overall, everything was going pretty well.

Gillum's support staff includes his brother, Russ and his wife, Brenda, of Des Moines.

"I just couldn't do it without them," Gillum said.

While in Centerville, Gillum and his support staff stopped at South Main Street and Highway 2 to get some French fries.

Gillum runs to raise money and awareness to combat cancer. Last Christmas, a friend and co-worker died from the disease.
