---- — Centerville will be celebrating planes, trains and automobiles during a special event on Saturday, Aug. 3 while also raising money for several local facilities.
According to Mike Thomas, a member of the BOB group, BOB came up with the idea of expanding on the annual fire department car show by adding more events throughout the day and also incorporating fundraising into the day. The group reached out to others in the community about getting events started at the airport and with the railroad. The result was the Planes, Trains and Automobiles Day, set to take place the first weekend in August.
The fun will begin at 8 a.m. with airplane rides at the Centerville Airport. The cost will be $20 for adults or $10 for kids under 12. According to Thomas, there will be three planes flying with volunteer pilots. Each flight will take 15-20 minutes and will fly out to Lake Ratbun. Airplane rides will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Money raised will go towards making improvements at the airport.
There will also be tandem skydiving available. The cost will be $230 for people who buy tickets in advance, or $250 to buy tickets on the day. Tickets can be purchased at the airport, however, there are a limited number available. Skydive Iowa out of Brooklyn will be running the tandem skydiving.
After taking a plane ride, people are encouraged to head over to East O'Neal Street in Centerville for a chance to ride the rails. The cost will be $15 per person. Ten rail cars will be on hand to transport passengers on a 45 minute, eight mile ride.
According to Thomas, the rail cars are small and were used on the rail as work cars. Each one can hold two to four passengers. The cars will be run by a group of enthusiasts who ride them on the local railroad as well as other tracks throughout the year.
All 10 rail cars will be running at the same time and will depart near the Curwood parking lot on East O'Neal Street. The rail rides will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Money raised will go to the Centerville VFW hall.
Finally, the Centerville Fire Department will be hosting their annual car show on the Square that day as well. Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with judging at 1 p.m. and awards at 3 p.m. The registration fee will be $12 to pre-register or $15 to register the day of the show. Contact the fire department to receive a registration form. The show is free and open to the public.
The trolley will be running a route between the Square, airport and the rail car departure point throughout the day. Car show participants will be able to ride the route for free. Everyone else can ride for a small fee.
