There is still time to take part in the summer lunch program at the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville.
Lunch is served to all ages Monday–Friday from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. The last lunch of the season is Friday, Aug. 2.
The summer lunch program is sponsored by the Appanoose County Ministerial Association in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture.
The well-balanced meals are served free regardless of age. The program is reimbursed by the USDA for children between the ages of 1-19 and for anyone older than 19 all that is asked, if able, is a free will offering.
Belinda Potter and Linda Leach work as cooks, meal planners and servers.
Members of several local churches come everyday to help serve, clean up and mentor and assist with the children. The churches also give monetary contributions to support the lunch program.
The churches who assist are: First United Methodist Church, Faith United Methodist Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, First Evangelical Lutheran Church Elca, Drake Avenue Christian Church and First Presbyterian Church.
On Wednesdays they have an education program following lunch at 11:45 a.m. Programs included water safety on Rathbun Lake by park rangers Ashleigh and Cami; owls by Amber Hoffman from Sharon Bluffs State Park; YMCA activities by Lauren Jones; furry animals by Amber Hoffman from Sharon Bluffs; and fire safety by Vern Milburn on Wednesday, July 31.
