Jeanie Pontious was recently named the 2013 Auxiliary/Volunteer Shining Star for Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
Pontious received the honor from the Iowa Hospital Association during their annual meeting held Oct. 8-10 in Des Moines.
Information from Pontious’ Shining Stars biography indicates Pontious first joined the Mercy Auxiliary in 1992 and quickly moved up into leadership positions. She has served on various committees and in various offices of the Auxiliary over her 21 year membership, including two terms as president. She also served a term on the state Auxiliary Board.
Some of her biggest accomplishments while serving with Auxiliary include being instrumental in organizing the group’s 45th anniversary in 1998, serving as editor of the newsletter for 10 years and initiating the biannual jewelry sale as a new source of income for the group. In her 21 year membership, Pontious has earned more than 25,000 volunteer hours.
Most recently she has managed the Mercy Medical Center gift shop for the past five years. In that time she completed a re-organization of the shop and has upgraded the buying of merchandise for resale. She is always looking for new inventory to grab the attention of potential customers. Under her leadership, the Centerville gift shop has been used as a model for other rural gift shops.
The IHA Auxiliary and Volunteer Shining Star Luncheon was held Oct. 10.
