Rathbun Lake Area YMCA in Centerville celebrated five years under their own management with its first ever block party Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Food, music, games, dance, massages and other activities were all part of the festivities.
Prior to 2008, the YMCA was operated by Mercy Hospital under the name of Appanoose County Recreation Center, Lauren Jones, a YMCA employee, said.
Jones said the idea behind the block party was to do something fun for the community.
“Maybe it will become an annual thing,” Jones said.
Sherri Meng, YMCA aquatics director, said the turnout was great and the weather cooperated. Meng said the block party was a way for the YMCA to give back to the community.
“I think it’s great,” Meng said. “Something for the kids. It’s good activities for the kids and trying to get the community involved.”
Meng said communities larger than Centerville do not have a YMCA, which makes Centerville very fortunate.
“We’re lucky to have this and it’s unfortunate that people don’t come out and use more of the facility,” Meng said. “I just wish people would come out and give us a chance.”
Meng said the YMCA is there to help anyone in the community who wants it or is willing to take the first step. She said the YMCA is trying to provide the community a place where they can go to and get fit, lose weight and have fun.
