Decorative shoe exhibit to stomp out human trafficking

Daily Iowegian

CENTERVILLE — Human trafficking is in our backyards. When many think of human trafficking, they associate it with sex trafficking and that is a large part of it. The reality is that men, women and children are also trafficked for service industry and other types of labor.

Disciples Women have taken on this issue and agreed to educate each other and our communities on the presence of human trafficking. That is why Drake Avenue Christian Church is hosting a Shoe Exhibit to stomp out human trafficking.

Everyone is invited to enter.  There are two divisions: Junior: Age 16 and under (entry fee $5) and General: Over age 16 (entry fee $10). Exhibits can be original artwork such as shoes crafted from oragamy, polymer clay, needlework, painted canvas shoes, photographs or displays such as family heirlooms, fun shoes or historical items. What you display is limited only by your creativity. If desired, your shoe(s) can be displayed in honor of or in memory of an individual or group. Visitors will be invited to vote for daily Peoples Choice awards in each division, and overall Best of Show prizes. Entries should be submitted on Thursday, June 21 or Friday, June 22 between 1 and 7 p.m.

The show opens Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m., and will be open daily from 1-7 p.m. through Thursday, June 28. There is no admission fee.  Everyone is encouraged to vote for their  favorite exhibits by donating $1 per vote. Vote as often as you wish and for as many entries as you wish. This is one election where ballot box stuffing is encouraged. All proceeds from entry fees and votes will be used to raise awareness and combat Human Trafficking through projects of the Disciples Women. Remember – these are shoes with a mission: To stomp out human trafficking!  For entry forms or more information contact The Drake Avenue Christian Church at (641) 856-8061 or
