CENTERVILLE — An Alliant Energy spokesperson said the company suspects a raccoon is the reason power went out for almost 40 percent of it’s customers early Tuesday.
Alliant Energy spokesperson Heather Holmes said the outage is expected to have occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to outage totals on the Alliant Energy’s website, as many as 2,940 customers in Appanoose County were affected.
Social media reports indicated that the outage affected many residents in Centerville as well as Mystic and Rathbun.
Many customers had power back by the early morning hours.
According to their website, Alliant Energy serves approximately 6,000 homes in Appanoose County.
Many other customers around the state of Iowa were without power Monday night into Tuesday. The reason for their outage, however, was the weather and not stray animals.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported that about 41,000 Alliant Energy customers were without power in the city of Cedar Rapids as of 7:30 p.m. Monday. Estimates there ranged from 24 to 48 hours.
UPDATE, 1:31 a.m.: The estimated time of power being restored is about one hour, Alliant Energy spokesperson Heather Holmes said.
UPDATE, 1:28 a.m.: Alliant Energy is expecting to restore power shortly to is affected customers. The outage is believed to have began at approximately 12:40 a.m. Tuesday. Alliant Energy's website was still reporting 2,940 were without power in the county as of 1:28 a.m.

ORIGINAL STORY: Reports of a power outage began rolling in by police reports over the scanner and followed by several social media reports at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.
As of 1:13 a.m., Alliant Energy was reporting that 2,285 were without power. The exact areas or reason are unknown at this time. According to social media and scanner reports, a large portion of Centerville and Mystic are without power.
