Dec. 9, 1941: On this night, the president spoke to the nation. People listened to it broadcast from the stages of the Ritz and the Majestic theatres. Three hundred and sixty county farmers and businessmen attending the Alfalfa Banquet listened inside the dining room of the Central Church of Christ on Drake Avenue on special radios installed for the purpose. “The country is at war,” President Roosevelt said, “but we are going to win and we are going to win the peace that follows.”
